Night fishing for sea trout's in Denmark

Sea trout's are the fish I usually go for, it's natural since the danish oceans, creates a perfect biotope for sea trout fishing.
The water temperature is essential and varies during the different seasons. Around 8-12 degrees are close to perfect, but during warm periods, it all happens during cool quiet nights, and very early mornings, where the water temperature drops.
These conditions are present right now in Denmark, so I have spent the last three nights fishing, and the day time trying to catch up with some zzzz's !!

Here is little photo essay from the last couple day's fishing at the north coast of what I call home.

PS. we didn't catch anything, saw some really nice fish 50 meter beyond our catching distance, but that's part of the game. Just being there is always a great experience. It's absolutely quiet and a very fascinating time of the day.

Thank you dear Englishmen, for spreading our fantastic sport.

The history behind fly fishing somehow always leads back to England - well it's natural, it was here it all started back in time, among Dukes and Royalties. It's such a fascinating story, which describes how the british enthusiasm lead to spreading our fantastic sport, to the most remote areas of our unique planet.
If it wasn't for this British enthusiasm - we probably wouldn't see much fly fishing today.
So I think it's more than fair to lift my hat, and bow quietly with the outmost of humble respect - of course - an say THANK you dear Englishmen, for spreading this absolutely sublime sport, we all love so much :O)

Robert Redford Reflects on the Gulf Oil Disaster.

Great video, great vision, great guy - let's get on with this vision - WORLDWIDE!!!
- don't forget - we, the consumers - are the ones who are capable of making the changes, by creating the right demands, voting for politicians who really want to make some of the right changes.
The former post is a prof of that.

Here you can support Robert Redford in telling Obama to support clean energy - But only if you are a US citizen (unfortunately).

Varde Å giant - 20.4 kgs.

Here is a photo of the biggest salmon caught in 2010, from Varde Å
- it weighed 20.4 kg  and was caught 17 of april.

(PS. I would have let this magnificent creature live, not to sound like a holy C & R freak!! - but look at it, such a beautiful and healthy fish - it deserves to be allowed to swim up stream, find a female and make a LOT of "baby-salmons"!!)

"Spill" - By Jason Barnhart and his fabulous miniatures.

The Mexican gulf is slowly dying, hour for hour, minute for minute oil is pouring  into the ocean, with a devastating effect to everything living.
It has inspired a lot of people to make a wide range of protest actions - from t-shirts to videos.
But this one is different from all the others I've seen, it is made by the photographer named Jason Barnhart, who has made a wide range of fantastic miniatures.

This one is called SPILL!!!

And here is another great one...

GREAT book about salmons and the environment round them.

Join acclaimed nature photographer Amy Gulick as she documents one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth. Gulick’s stunning photographs -- together with essays and audio from noted authors including Carl Safina, Douglas Chadwick, and Richard Nelson -- tell a hopeful story of Alaska's Tongass rain forest, where trees grow salmon, and salmon grow trees.

"…what if I told you that the trees are here, in part, because of salmon? That the trees that shelter and feed the fish, that help build the fish, are themselves built by the fish?"

Salmon in the Trees

More people need to step up and say, hey, we're not gonna let you trash our heritage. It's our land and we're going to protect it.

Save Bristol Bay Update - send a message to Mitsubishi now!!

Help "Spotsman's Alliance for Alaska" and "Save BioGems" to send a clear message to Mitsubishi.

The giant Japanese corporation Mitsubishi holds roughly an 11% stake in Northern Dynasty Minerals, one of the partners in the proposed Pebble Mine project. Mitsubishi’s annual shareholder meeting is being held on June 24 in Tokyo, and we’d like to send a strong message to the company’s directors and shareholders that the Bristol Bay region is not appropriate for a massive mining project. Japan is a very big market for wild Alaska salmon.

The more mails they get, the more concerned they will bee - it is a simple fact, that we - the costumers - have a great power in our hands, we just have to use it.
Without no doubt they know that it takes a long time to build up a good brand, but it only takes a short time to ruin it again, by doing something we - the costumers don't like.
So send them the message today, send them a signal that this isn't just a local concern, it is a global concern.

You will find the direct link to this pre-made mail message here:

A Tick bit my butt!!!

After a my trip to Austria I found a tick on my butt!!!
The first one I ever been bitten by. I removed it and called my doctor. He told me to keep an eye on the area. I did, at first there was nothing to see, but then after a couple of days the area started to get red and swollen - and that means problems, so I called him again and quickly got a antibiotic cure, which I am now going follow for ten days.
The first symptoms were pains in my joints, especially my knees and leg muscles, it felt like I had the flue, sweating and feeling dizzy. Quite frankly I felt like shit, and still do. This little experience have really put things in perspective.

We fly fishers are "crawling around" in the woods, and here we are really exposed to these small "vampires". But it isn't the bite and the blood sucking that causes problems, it's the bacteria it brings with it - Borrelia Burgdorferi - a bactaria that can cause a lot of problems if not treated in a hurry. Borrelia Burgdorferi causes the so called Lyme disease (see several links below)

But it doesn't stop here, it isn't only the Borrelia bacteria this little devil can carry arround.  The TBE (tick borne encephalitis - also called the eastern encephalitis. ) is a virus and can develop into this very serious decease  (TBE) and it is recommended, that anyone who spends a lot of time out in nature, get a TBE vaccine.
TBE is still very seldom but after this nasty experience, I will pay my doctor a visit monday and get this vaccine.

I won't take any chances - not after that little "sucker" has bitten my butt!!

If the reaction from the bite looks like this - call a doctor!!

This tick is full of blood - truly a disgusting little creature!!!

Serious debate on Morrum website regarding C & R.

A nice salmon dubblé from 9.6 caught in Pool # 1
C & R is a sensitive subject, and in some situations it simply get to the point where is is out of control.
I might ad that I believe in C & R - if it is practiced correctly. I'v seen too many situations where the fish is more or less dead after a heavy fight and a intense photo session, and then finally released!! - that is just terrible, then it's better to keep the fish and enjoy a splendid meal in good company with nice bottle of wine.
Right now in Morrum, it has reached the point where Percy - the daily leader of Morrum Kronolaxfiske - have decided to shut down the possibility for any future comments on their website. A sad situation and development, that unfortunately has gone out of control. The few spoil it for all the rest - as usual!!
The last post - "Öppenhetens dilemma" - is about this problemt, and here you can read some serious and thoughtful posts - one of them is written by Mr. Nigel Griffiths from MFA (Morrum fishing Association).
Here is a small part of his relevant and serious post - you can read the rest if you follow the link below (Mr. Griffiths post is in english).

"Yesterday I was a fishing guest of a fishing club, and the only thing I wanted to do was fish. But the only topic that the hosts and anglers wanted to talk about was what is happening to the Mörrumsån. Much to my surprise, and to be truthful, most had hidden resentments towards the fishery that had built up over the years. Now I’m not talking about a whole bunch of kids here, these were older professional people, doctors, lawyers and businessmen. Remembering what had been said has good bearing on the latest commentary from Percy. It was bound to happen that the “keyboard warriors” would rant and rave and make personal insults and use the board for their hidden agenda. However, we are not mice, we are men, so it comes with the territory. What I do believe, is that the “frustrations” have been building up over the years, and now many see the previous fishing articles in the fishing magazines and newspapers here and in Germany as false advertising, A lot of the sport fishermen who fish the river are only now being given the chance to “air their views” even if we don’t like what we read………that’s real freedom of expression. If some have abused the “proper way” and turned to the social networking sites to air their frustrations…..that’s their provocative to do so. But if as it is suggested, there will be a “wall of silence” I believe this will create more problems. One, the fishermen will draw their own conclusions, which could be the wrong ones, and two, many will believe that the implied draconian action of stopping all fishing will imply, that things don’t get done until it’s too late…..therefore, stop everything. But you can bet your life that the commercial nets men will continue to fish One again, C&R is mentioned, and at this stage it is a very emotive issue. The MFA have in the past advocated voluntary C&R, and I believe that this is the “way forward” But if……and a big if, it gets worse. Then C&R will take hold, as this is the way that the sport fishermen can show to the authorities that they are doing their bit to help. Having said that, it reminds me of what an older angler said yesterday. He has fished the Tweed in England/Scotland four times a year for the last thirty years, and he said, that when the Tweed managers and associations decided to implement C&R on the Tweed. There was an outcry from the locals who threatened, that they would not fish again if there was to be C&R. Everyone “stood firm” and three years later, all the locals were back fishing again, so it can work"

NORTH ATLANTIC SALMON FUND - PAUL VOLCKER APPEALS FOR HELP FOR THE SALMON

Paul Volcker - help to restore wild salmon stocks.
When the going gets tough, Paul Volcker, formerly chairman of the US Federal Reserve, gets a call.  Recently it was President Obama who called to appoint Volcker to head his economic recovery team and today it is the North Atlantic Salmon Fund (NASF) calling to enlist Volcker’s help to restore stocks of wild Atlantic salmon.

Volcker is a passionate fly fisherman and friend of Orri Vigfusson who heads up the NASF group that works to deploy sustainable economic solutions to support the wild salmon populations of the North Atlantic.  Fly fishing has been a part of Paul's life for at least as long as economics and he has fished a great many rivers around the world.  For a number of years, Volcker has supported the NASF schemes to compensate netsmen throughout the North Atlantic. The direct result is that 85% of salmon netsmen throughout the North Atlantic have signed up to conservation schemes and alternative fisheries that allow more precious wild salmon to return to their native rivers to breed.

Great news and a big applause from Pool 32 Mag

New Algae Species Discovered In Chile’s Patagonia Region

A new algae type has arrived to Chile

It's latin name is DidymospheniaIt - but it is often referred to as the "Didymo" or “Rock Snot” or “The Toliet Paper Weed,” and is usually brought over from other parts of the world through tourists who carry it in their rafting, kayaking or fishing gear.

In February, Chris Spelius, owner of the adventure travel company Expediciones Chile, was standing out by the Futaleufu River in Southern Chile waiting for a client, when he looked into the normally clear water and noticed something unusual.
“I saw what looked like ground-up toilet paper in the water,” Spelius recalled to the Santiago Times this week.  “I have been here for 24 years and I knew I had never seen this before.”

If left unregulated, the organism could have a devastating effect on the local ecosystems because it kills off bottom-dwelling insects that fish normally feed off of.

If you want to read more about this development then follow this link: http://www.santiagotimes.cl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18963:invasive-algae-species-discovered-in-chiles-patagonia-region-&catid=44:environmental&Itemid=40

Just got this in my mail box today - Help support Bristol Bay - Send them a "thank you mail"

"Eleven more jewelers have signed the Bristol Bay Protection Pledge -- and endorsed protection for the world's largest remaining wild sockeye salmon fishery in Bristol Bay, Alaska.
These pledges come in addition to the recent promise, and your thank you letters, to Zales -- America's 2nd largest jewelery retailer.  Both that pledge, and your thanks, made waves in the jewelry and mining industries.

A huge mayfly hatch along the Mississippi River

First Mayfly hatch of the year caught on a doppler radar of NWS La Crosse.  The radar view below shows an image from May 29, 2010.  The bugs are showing up as bright pink, purple, and white colors along the Mississippi River mainly south of La Crosse. After the bugs hatch off the water and river areas, they are caught in the south-southeast winds while airborne for about 10-20 minutes.

A giant from Morrum - again.

Everybody who have fished in the "Magic Morrum River"- knows that the chance of a really big fish is always a possibility, as long as your fly is out there in the humus colored waters.

This years biggest fish has just been landed in Morrum from pool no. 4 - it weighed 17.22 kgs caught by Mikael Andersson - and we at Pool 32 Mag congratulate you Mikael with this fantastic catch.

As always the debate regarding C & R is going on with a fish like that. I know it is a very sensitive and difficult issue, personally I wouldn't have been able to kill such a magnificent creature. But on the other hand for some people it is one of those "once in a life time fish" that could end up over a fireplace stuffed and puffed.

What a beauty it is - somehow I never get's tired of looking at salmons, they truly are the Kings of any river.

PS. the fish counter measured an even bigger fish the other day, estimated to be over 119 cm long!!

Tight lines out there.

The oil spill in the Mexican Gulf - here is a little update!

Extent of Oil Spill Remains Unclear

Nearly a month after BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, one question remains unanswered: Exactly how much oil is spilling into the Gulf from the unchecked leak?

Have a look at this counter - it shows an estimated view of what is going on  !!

Leroy Stick – the man behind @BPGlobalPR

I started @BPGlobalPR, because the oil spill had been going on for almost a month and all BP had to offer were bullshit PR statements.  No solutions, no urgency, no sincerity, no nothing.  That’s why I decided to relate to the public for them.  I started off just making jokes at their expense with a few friends, but now it has turned into something of a movement.  As I write this, we have 100,000 followers and counting.  People are sharing billboards, music, graphic art, videos and most importantly information.
